Rice cutgrass

Common Name(s):
Rice cutgrass
Scientific Name:
Leersia oryzoides
Family:
Poaceae
Growth Traits:
Native, perennial, cool season
Description: A rhizomatous grass which grows in moist soil, low areas and shallow water. The leaves have teeth along the margins which are sharp to the touch. Rice cutgrass is an excellent plant for bank stabilization and erosion control but can become overabundant. The rhizomes and seeds are food for many wildlife species such as waterfowl. Young growth of rice cutgrass is considered a palatable forage to cattle. The plant provides good habitat for invertebrates, which are eaten by fish and waterfowl. Rice cutgrass is a cool-season plant that grows similarly to a warm-season grass.
Chemical Control Options: Glyphosate, glufosinate or clethodim.
Mechanical Control Options: Regular tillage can be effective.
Biological Control Options: Heavy cattle grazing will control it.
